5 Ways to Start Something New This Earth Day
Earth Day started in 1970 as a call to pay attention to what is happening around us and to take responsibility for the places we call home. More than 50 years later, that idea still holds up. It is not about doing everything at once. It is about choosing to start somewhere.
If you are looking for a place to begin, here are five simple ways to start something new this Earth Day.
1. Wear Wild
This week, one of the easiest ways to take action is by showing up for the wild places you care about. The Born Wild Collection, created in partnership with Illumine Collect, is available for a limited 10-day presale. It celebrates the wild places worth protecting and gives back in a real way with 40% of every purchase directly supporting this work.
Grab one while you can, then wear it as a reminder of what you are helping protect.
2. Plant something
Plant a tree, add native plants to your yard, or even start with a pot on your porch. It does not have to be elaborate to matter. Adding more green space and native habitat is a practical way to support pollinators, birds, and healthier local ecosystems.
3. Spend time outside somewhere you love
Take a walk, visit a park, sit by a river, or head out on a trail you have not explored in a while. The more connected people feel to the outdoors, the more likely they are to care about protecting it.
4. Learn something new about an issue close to home
Read up on a local water quality issue. Learn more about wildlife crossings in Virginia. Pay attention to a nearby development project or land use decision. Environmental issues are not just abstract national stories. They show up in our own communities.

5. Start one conversation
Talk to a friend about a place you care about. Share something you learned. Invite someone to get outside with you. Change usually grows from people paying attention and bringing others with them.
Earth Day does not have to be about doing everything at once. It can simply be a reason to start with one thing, then keep going.
